Being an Author is a business

An author usually means you write. But really if you are wanting to be a full-time author you must treat your writing as a business. It takes the romance out of writing but it is essential to change that mind set to make it work.

There are a number of elements that need to be addressed

• Writing

• Finances

• marketing

• Sales

• promotion

• Merchnadise

• Etc.

This is just the tip of the iceberg but ultimialtey each is just as important as the other.

I have been working on all these areas in some fashion for the last two years with varying degrees of effort and success. The output that I am chasing is not just a great story but is the ability to grow the community of people that follow , talk about and promote my novel/s. But it is more than that.

I need people to promote more than my novels I need them to be passionate about me and what I stand for as an author. I need them to be passionate about the characters in my stories and talk about them to others. To achieve this I need to make sure that my social media posts help them connect with me, That any money earned goes back into the things that help to grow my ability to tell stories.

Editing, Promotion, Ads merchandise they all cost money. And while money has never been something I have needed to care about , when you run a business it is essential as it is the life blood that helps to grow your business.

So writing is important but if you want this to be more than just a hobby writing cannot be the only thing you do.
